God Is…I Am… Devotional

Day 79 – 4/14/19: RENEWING TRUTH:

God Cares About My Words

RENEWING SCRIPTURE:

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.

PSALM 141:3, NKJV

RENEWING THOUGHT:

Your words matter. It is with very good reason that the Bible encourages us to remain quick to listen and slow to speak, not hasty with what we say (see James 1:19). God has designed us in such a way that our words carry power. They change things. They can build up or they can tear down. They can encourage or they can dishearten. Think before you speak; save yourself from saying something you might later regret.

James chapter 3 warns us of the power of the unrestrained tongue. Though the tongue is only a small part of the body, it is a fire capable of making great boasts. If you do not control your words, they can bring corruption to the whole body and set the course of your life on fire. Simply stated, words matter.

Here’s wonderful news. God wants to help you. If you ask Him, He can set a guard over your lips. He can keep your mouth from being a doorway of destructive words.

Think about your words. Be aware of what you’re saying in moments of stress, frustration, anger, or disappointment. You are framing your future with the words of your mouth. They not only influence your life but also the lives of those around you. Like the psalmist, ask the Lord to set a guard over your mouth and keep watch over the door of your lips.

RENEWING INSPIRATION:

What’s coming out of your mouth today? What are you confessing today? What are you speaking into your atmosphere today? …God prepares you for what’s coming by first fixing what comes out of mouth.

Day 80 – 4/15/19: RENEWING TRUTH:

I Speak Life Not Death

RENEWING SCRIPTURE:

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love

it will eat its fruit.

PROVERBS 18:21, NIV

RENEWING THOUGHT:

You are made in the image of God. You have His breath of life within you. In fact, the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead is living inside you (see Romans 8:11). That means your words carry influence, power, and authority for life or death on the earth today.

Consider well your words before you speak. They hold the power to bring hope to the hopeless. They can comfort those who mourn. They can deliver truth and set the oppressed free. They can encourage those teetering at the edge of despair. Your words could mean eternal life or death to someone.

Speak life over yourself and over those around you. You are a royal emissary, entrusted with the words of life. And you are partner with God to fulfill His purposes. Use your words to hind up the brokenhearted, rescue the perishing, and speak the life-giving Word of God.

To do so, you will have to shut your ears to the relentless flow of the negative words of the world, for "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (see Luke 6:45). Fill your heart with God's words. Agree with Him and receive His truth instead of the world's lies. Believe what God has said about you and speak His Word boldly and confidently today!

RENEWING INSPIRATION:

You control the doorway to what you allow in. You can dwell on every negative thought and every derogatory comment, or you can choose to delete it and dwell on what God says about you.
