Abused Woman Ministries, Inc. (AWM) was started in December 2008 by Dr. Dorothy E. Hooks as the educational support tool for The Lula McGrady Foundation, Inc. which is Dr. Hook's other organization; it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Christian based organization. AWM was founded because Dr. Hooks know it is going to take in-depth teaching for the abused woman to fully recover. Under AWM, the Abused Woman Recovery Group, Abused Woman Recovery Program, and the Abused Woman Ministries' School of Healing were born. The first step in the recovery process is teaching abused women to forgive their abuser, what abuse is, then once they understand what abuse is, they can be taught how to recover; we make sure we let them know recovering from abuse is a process.

 

The vision God has given Dr. Hooks is to see women set free from the bondage of domestic violence. Dr. Hooks knows what it feels like to be hopeless and helpless; to hit rock bottom. Dr. Hooks was a victim of domestic violence from the age of 17 until the age of 54; that's a long time to be in bondage but God brought her out. She went from relationship to relationship, getting deeper and deeper into bondage and did not realize it. Not only was Dr. Hooks in bondage from domestic violence but also from childhood issues (abandonment, rejection, sexual assault at age 16, etc.) from the age of 2 until the age of 17. So, Dr. Hooks thank God for her total deliverance; it was not easy but God was with her every step of the way. Now God has given Dr. Hooks the tools to help other women recover from domestic violence/abuse.
